Easy Crackers To Make With Children

Cooking is at once child’s play and adult joy. And cooking done with care is an act of love.

It hardly feels like a good time to do a food blog. With the world grinding to a halt due to the corona virus pandemic and loved ones being lost each day, one can only feel despair and sadness.

Staying at home is the one thing we can do, both, for ourselves and the health and well being of the wider community. But it is easy to feel lost. A loss of ideas…

We need to keep occupied and creative in some way or another. The current pandemic maybe affecting families in more ways than one. Young children could feel particularly edgy and will need plenty of reassurance as they sense the anxiety of adults around them.

Amidst the chaos outside, maintaining calm and sanity at home will be major a challenge.

If you feel you have already read that book, watched those movies, are exhausted from social media, have cleaned your room – many times over, planted out your veggies, or simply want to give it all a break, it might be a good time to try out this cracker recipe.

What can be more comforting than the smell of home baking?

It is an easy recipe to try with young children. They will want to make more! Your reliance on supermarkets will reduce by a tiny fraction and you will also avoid multiple layers of plastic packaging. The kids will say to their friends, ‘We made the most yummy crackers at home’.

These are also wonderful to share with people who are unable to make a trip to purchase food or those who cannot make their own. It is the time to look out for each other. We could all do with some care, warmth and good food.

With only a few, very basic ingredients on the list, this is quite achievable!

Easy Cracker Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Plain Flour
  • 1/4 Cup Wholewheat Flour
  • 3 Tbsp Sunflower Oil
  • 1/2 Tsp Salt
  • 1/4 Tsp Cumin Seeds
  • 1/4 Tsp Ground Pepper
  • 6 Tbsp Water

Method

Mix both flours, 2 tbsp of oil, salt, cumin seeds and black pepper.

Add water and make into a dough. Add the remaining oil (1 tbsp) and knead the dough well.

Divide the dough into two parts and shape into smooth, round balls.

Roll out each ball as thin as possible and cut into long strips.

Lay the strips out on a baking tray. Bake at 175 degrees celsius for 10 minutes, turn crackers over and bake for another 3 minutes.

Serve with hummus, guacamole or a dip of your choice!

Makes about 30 crackers.

Hope you enjoy making these crackers. These can be stored in air tight containers for at least a week. You probably won’t get to that. They will disappear much much sooner!
